Writer's Toolkit

Figuring out what you want to write is vital, but so is deciding how you want to do so. To assist in this foundational step, we have provided links to three of the most popular and widely used platforms we have come across. We have also listed some of their pros and cons, but ultimately it will be up to you, the creative mastermind, as to how you want to move forward.

PROS:

  • Most widely used general writing platform.
  • Most writers are at least somewhat familiar with the software's tools and formatting "quirks".
  • Updates occur on a regular basis and have enabled easier PDF editing tools.

CONS:

  • $$$ CHA CHING $$$
    • Annual fee of $100+.
  • LOADING, LOADING, LOADING!
    • Automatic updates are rarely streamlined and often bog down the system while occurring at the most inopportune times.

PROS:

  • $$$ CHA CHING $$$
    • Free software that is linked to the most popular search engine available.
  • Many educational organizations are adopting this software and Chromebook hardware due to its cost point.
  • Updates tend to be very user friendly.

CONS:

  • Majority of agents and publishers lean toward the use of Microsoft Word for submissions.

PROS:

  • Comprehensive writing and editing tool list.
  • Available for Windows, Apple, and iOS.

CONS:

  • Second most expensive at $59.99, unless you need to have software compatible with both Apple AND Windows, which costs $95.98.
    • Updates cost extra.
  • Difficult to get used to.
  • Doesn't play well with other editing software formats.
  • Difficult to "share" documents.
